it's here

Well it looks like IGN has a quake 4 review, and I'm actually kind of happy that it wasn't rated great. In my mind id lost it years ago with Quake 3 and has since been unable to redeem themselves. Now don't get me wrong, the games they've been putting out are by no means bad games, but they are not the same 1st tier innovators they once were. I've long believed that they've been stuck in the past, recycling old gameplay into pretty looking games. It seems to me they needed Quake 4 to be great and new. Quake 3 was an overall dissapointment, RtCW was fun but didn't do anything new, and Doom 3 (their high water mark since Quake 2) while fun and spectacular looking still failed to bring anything new to the genre. I must admit I haven't even read the IGN review yet, but an 8.2 is nothing to be proud of from a former industry leader. Unreal and Battlefield have long since taken Quake's multiplayer crown away, and Doom 3 and RtCW just can't compete with the brilliance of Half-Life 2 or the historic immersion of Call of Duty.

And so hopefully this last effort on their part will convince everyone else what I have thought for some years now: id is no longer a 1st tier developer. Semper fi id, but for the loe of god it's time people admitted your time has passed.

And for the record, those who I believe are include Valve, Relic, Blizzard, and to some degree Lionhead (not always the very best games but by far the most consistently innovative out there). It's interesting that of all many developers and good games out there these are the only ones whose names alone will make me pay attention to a game.
