Considering how many non-native speakers have chosen to write in English on LJ I was surprised (and frustrated) when I couldn't find a community devoted to the improvement of one's English skills. Believe it or not, but for once German is actually simpler than English:

German- Geringschätzung

vs

English- floccinaucinihilipilification (a jocular coinage, said to be the longest non-medical English word)

[meaning contemptuousness]

I just found out that if I talked to some of you guys about a "thermionic valve" you'd look baffled.

Apparently, you call it "vacuum tube".

...

But if you had talked to me about a "vacuum tube" I would have been equally baffled. I would have assumed a "vaccum tube" is a part of a device you use to clean up the floor.

So we're even.
