Summary: Caitlin Todd was raised to be good. So she figured out all the different shades of good.
In Abby's experience, the cross dangling between two collarbones was a definite "no admittance" sign. She didn't have a problem with that. Religion was fine. She was big on religion. It just meant that she wouldn't try and have some extracurricular fun with this one. Abby made her decisions right upon the first meeting with Kate Todd. And then the Good Catholic Girl had to throw Abby for a loop.
"You just like strapping on a gun."
"Hmm. More than one."
"Really."
"What else do you like strapping on?"
"That's not really an appropriate question for work, Miss Sciuto."
"So?"
"So... ask me again when we're not at work."
Caitlin Todd was a Good Catholic Girl. She went to Mass on Sunday, lit candles, had a Bible on her nightstand. Occasionally she knelt next to the bed to say prayers. Caitlin Todd could quote scripture from memory. But Abby didn't know that Caitlin. She knew Kate. She knew the Kate who pressed a surprised forensic scientist against a wall and kissed her hard. The Kate who wore fancy lace underwear and growled when she came.
Sweetness and light coexisted in Kate, somehow neither one overwhelming or overshadowing the other. Kate was a contradiction in terms, and Abby commemorated their one year anniversary with a yin-yang tattoo on her lower hip. Right where Kate sometimes grabbed her when they played with the strap-on.
To everyone else in the world, Kate was straight-laced and vanilla. But to Abby, Kate was lace panties and black lipstick.
