They picked the top 5 of each (m/f), which left 2 spaces for the top 12, and the judges got to pick those. You DO remember that I'm an Idolator, right?

Okay, here's how it works: Each season, they go to ?? about 8 cities for the initial auditions. About a zillion people in each place file past some poor assistant producers or whathaveyou and sing at them.
