I am 95% done with Les Miserables. Marius is proving to be every ounce the dick I thought he would be if he found out that Jean Valjean was an ex-con. He's refraining from asking pertinent questions (because oh noes, he might not like the answers!) and suddenly perceiving a man who'd been very kind and generous to him and to Cosette as a monster.
And no, Hugo, all of your essays about conflict and uncertainty are NOT convincing me to think better of Marius for this. Marius is doing what he always does--idolizing the pretty side of things and becoming paralyzed with horror at the sight of flaws and unpleasantness.
I'm not impressed.
Why couldn't one of the guards have killed Marius at the barricade? I'll trade Marius for Gavroche any day of the week!
