1. Reply to this post with "UNICORNS," and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.
st_salieri picked these five:
The first, which is by
nessima, is probably the least used, because it's only for one day every year--
the Glorious 25th of May, dedicated to the battle for Truth, Justice, Reasonably Priced Love, and a Hard-Boiled Egg. And if you do not know what I am talking about, run, do not walk, to your nearest library or bookstore and pick up a copy of Terry Pratchett's Night Watch. It deals with Sam Vimes, accidental time travel, the malleability of the past, revolutions, conspiracies, corruption, History Monks, and the backstory of Ankh-Morpork in the days before Vetinari was the Patrician. You'll love it.
The second, by
icons_of_isis, is of Tegan Jovanka (on the left) and Nyssa of Traken, who were both companions of the Fourth and Fifth Doctors. Tegan was an Australian flight attendant who walked into the TARDIS by mistake (something that often happened in Classic Who, as Doctors One through Eight were not great about keeping the door locked). Nyssa...well, she was created for one four-part episode called The Keeper of Traken, but proved to be so popular that she was brought back for the following episode, Logopolis (in which the Fourth Doctor regenerated into the Fifth). The two couldn't have been more different, but they became great friends. I am a sucker for improbable friendships.
Also notable was Nyssa's eventual departure. She chose to leave the Doctor and turn a space station that had been used as a prison for those suffering from an illness called "lazar disease" into a real hospital providing a real cure. I love that. The Doctor didn't jettison her or force her to forget--no, she left on her own, and she made the universe a better place. That's class.
I initially grabbed this because I wanted some women from Classic Who in the icons I was using to hand out prompts for
femgenficathon--and I wanted multiple women in the same icon. I kept it because--well, I love Classic Who as well as New Who, and Nyssa and Tegan are awesome.
The third icon is the only one of the five that I made. That's Katherine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine in The Lion in Winter. That's one of my favorite movies of all time, featuring one of my favorite women of all time, played by one of my favorite actresses of all time. Making an icon was practically a requirement. (And if you haven't seen this movie, PLEASE rent it, borrow it from the library, or watch it online. It's the most gloriously dysfunctional family saga that you'll ever see. The Plantagenets were messed UP.)
The fourth dates from December 2010.
margueritem wanted a Hyperbole and a Half story about the
Alot for Yuletide, and that led
rebecca2525 to make the Yuletide Alot, which was a HUGE hit. (There are two versions, one with the Santa hat and one without, but I feel that the Santa hat really makes it a Yuletide Alot.)
The fifth icon is by
das_mervin. I don't have many SPN icons--two of Castiel, one of Bobby Singer, one of Ellen Harvelle, one of Anna Milton and one of Sam Winchester. If this isn't the only black and white icon I have, it's one of a very few. I like the play of light and shadow in this picture, as well as Sam's look of enigmatic amusement.
