Every day an old man hauls his banged up acoustic guitar and mini-amp to the discount P.A. Supermarche on Parc, and he sits there and plays from morning until night. People know him because he's a very accomplished player, distinctive with his cart full of stuff- including a couple of large ice cream buckets to sit on and what I assume is a prop bottle of wine to place in his guitar case. Today I noticed another old man sitting beside him from afar and I wondered if this extra was disturbing the show...but as per ritual I paused my ipod while walking by, and here they are singing "Across the Universe" by the Beatles in beautiful harmony. So I threw in some money and stood there thinking the words for a second and wanting more than anything to join them. And so I did; just knelt down beside them and we sang three part harmony. There was garbage all over the place and all their cigarette butts were blowing off the music stand but people stopped and listened. There was also a large cargo truck full of groceries being unloaded and one of the delivery men was just beaming...I could see him hesitating and then he came over and sang with us too. Two potentially homeless men, a girl on her way to calculus and a grocery delivery driver singing like a bunch of no-good hippies. Or a do-gooder barber shop quartet.
