More frequently now I'm finding that drinking strong coffee gives me crippling stomach cramps which can only be alleviated by laying still on one side for a while, then switching to the other side. It can take hours for this to go away, so I will either sleep, listen to the radio or stare at the wall. Tonight I've been staring at the wall worrying about a flight to Chicago next week. Despite the fact that I have been touring with a band for the past 5 months, which has entailed flying up to 12 times per month, I am somehow growing increasingly terrified of planes. We only had bad turbulence once, in China. Immediately after one heart-stopping drop we could smell cigarette smoke coming from the bathroom- some guy had been in there when it happened and he probably thought that he was going to die on an airplane toilet.
But aside from that one incident, everything was fine...its possible that my fear is based on probabilities.
There are a lot of things to be scared about, so maybe I should take a lesson from that guy smoking in the airplane bathroom and just make the most of it.
Anyway, I'm going to Chicago for an interview. I've applied to the Northwestern University program in Music Theory and Cognition, so they're flying me down there and showing me around campus, etc. On the Saturday night I have a choice of going to see a saxophone quartet or the Who's 'Tommy'. I've been listening to nothing but The Who so I can impress the faculty with my ability to sing along and psych out my competition. I've been working on a sweet rendition of 'Magic Bus'.
