Last night was AWESOME. Northwestern was host to Ohio State for our first home football game at night in a few years. Ohio State fans had arrived in our capmus parking lots by noon to tailgate, charging the atmosphere and increasing the average BAC on campus by about .2. But the rowdy Ohio State fans couldn't possibly have known what they were in for . . . mwahahaha.
So in case you couldn't have guessed by now, the lowly Northwestern football team beat the sixth-ranked (in the nation) Ohio State for the first time since 1971. Nationally televised and everything, it was Ohio State's first loss here in Evanston since 1958. And it was done in dramatic fashion. Ohio State never lead but was always close, scoring 10 fourth quarter points to tie the game at 27. Their All-American kicker was about a foot wide in a field goal attempt in overtime on OSU's possession. Meanwhile, our kicker was perfect on the night with two field goals (a remarkable feat because he is generally terrible, and managed to miss five field goals in our double overtime loss in our season-opener). So our quarterback ran the ball over 20 yards to set up a 1-yard winning touchdown run.
Pandemonium ensued. It was sweeeet. The entire student body, myself included, rushed the field. Although the dozen or so people who tried to tear down the goal post probably never succeeded, a good time was had by all. We also had to assure my roommate, who had never even watched an American football game before, that this one was probably the most exciting game of which he'll be a part. So yeah, watch out Purdue, we're not going to let you spoil our homecoming that easily.
