Who can I apply as?
► As a panfandom roleplay, Gauntlet accepts characters from all forms of media: television, film, book, comic, manga, anime, video game, and everything in-between. We accept Original Universe, Alternate Universe, and Roleplay Universe versions of these as well. More on that below.
► What we do not accept at this time are original characters, characters with so little canon basis that they might as well be original characters (i.e. a character that appeared in a cameo only a couple times), historical figures without a media counterpart (i.e. Frederick Chopin as he was in life, rather than as he was in Eternal Sonata), and real people.
► We also do not accept characters from as-yet unreleased media that is not available to an audience at large. To be more specific, films that are still in development, books/comics that are not yet on the shelf, and video games that have not yet been released in English. Things like anime and manga that have been subtitled/scanlated by fans and released to the public are the exception to this. Additionally, characters from new television series/new characters in new seasons are asked to wait until at least half the episodes in the season have aired before applying. If you're not sure what your chosen fandom falls under, please contact a mod before applying.
What do you mean by versions?
► Gauntlet allows for up to three different versions of a character to be applied for within the game. They are as follows:
• Original Universe (OU): The character drawn straight from their canon during some point in the story's current timeline. If a character has died, they may be taken from after their death; whether or not they remember dying is up to you!
• Alternate Universe (AU): The character from a place and time different from what the story presents originally. It can be as subtle as a few altered events (i.e. Naruto joined a team other than Team 7), or as drastic as that character being from a completely different universe (i.e. Naruto is a normal modern day teenager).
• Roleplay Universe (RU): Here we get a little more complicated. This is a character lifted straight from another roleplay; they may be played as remembering all the events that transpired during that roleplay before they left. The stipulations being that this character must have been played in this game for at least three months, has been dropped from that game, and has to have experienced enough character development to facilitate playing them as RU.
If your character is from a DR: The same amount of activity is required (at least three months) and you must show in your application that you and your character treated the dressing room experience as serious enough to promote character development. Additionally, the DR can not be a breaking-the-fourth-wall type (i.e. dear_mun).
► Players may only apply as a specific character once, which means that if you would like to play OU Harry Potter, that's fine! But you are not allowed to play the AU and RU versions as well.
► Only one of each universe may be applied for overall; only one original universe, one alternate universe, and one roleplay universe may exist in the game at any given time.
► In media where there are already alternate versions of characters (i.e. Kingdom Hearts Cloud and Final Fantasy VII Cloud), both of these may be applied for which can, potentially, lead to up to six Clouds in one sitting (although why anyone would want that many is anyone's guess). However, this does not apply to manga versus anime or comic versus film; if someone applies as a manga-verse Host Club character, for example, then the anime-verse of that character cannot be applied for by another player.
► However! Keep in mind that the current character limit per player is four and the limit per fandom (that is, how many from a specific fandom a player can app as) is two.
What if my character is unusual (a Transformer, a ghost, a mermaid, a mouse, a unicorn, etc.)?
► The universe of the RPG is very much like the universes of Star Trek and Star Wars; the people here have been exposed to alien life of all shapes and sizes. Characters that at not strictly humanoid will receive the same treatment as those that are!
► But there are a few restrictions! Transformers can only stay on the Hawking because it is the only ship with a sizable docking bay that can house them (see the How-To for more information); the same goes for characters that arrived with their Gundams/misc. other giant robots. There will be opportunities for these larger-sized individuals to go out and about (planets, space stations, other ships), just keep in mind when applying that they will be restricted to one ship!
► Similar restrictions apply to other character types; mermaids or characters that require biozones to live in (water, forests) will be restricted to the Uesugi: Medical Division.
► Characters with medical needs (they'll die if certain things are not done to/for them) will be required to visit the Uesugi: Medical Division on a regular basis to deal with these needs. All of this can be hand-waved aside or understood to have happened off-screen, just keep it in mind!
► If you're unsure about how/where your character would end up, please, feel free to contact at mod at any time via the mod mail (gauntletmods@gmail.com).
Are applications open?
► Applications are currently CLOSED indefinitely.
My character was in the previous game,
crucible_rpg; can I re-apply for them?
► Yes you may! However, there are a few things to consider:
• If your character was dropped or left the ship at the conclusion of the plot and is now returning with full memory of their time on the ship, they must be applied for as a roleplay universe version.
• If your character did not leave the ship at the conclusion of the plot, please contact a mod before applying.

Application Guidelines (UPDATED OCTOBER 2, 2010 - so all applications received after this date will reflect the changes made.)
► Player
•Name/Nickname: What you'd like to be called.
Livejournal Username: Your personal journal here on livejournal, if you have one.
AIM/MSN/Yahoo: What other players can use to contact you; if you'd prefer another means, feel free to list it here as well.
Timezone: The timezone for your area, for scheduling purposes.
Current Characters: Characters you currently play in Gauntlet. If you are a new player, you may list N/A instead.
► Character
Name: Your character's full name, first and last.
Fandom: The name of the game/series/movie/book/cave painting the character is from. Please specify between different sources, i.e. comic-verse or movie-verse for Tony Stark, or anime-verse or manga-verse for Sailor Moon, as well as the point in the series from which you are taking them. This is in order to avoid confusion with other players from the same fandom.
Age: If there is a difference between physical and mental age, please note it here as well. Please note that the game has some restrictions based on a character's age.
Gender: Male, female, other?
OU, AU, or RU: Please indicate which version of your character that you will be playing, and please be aware of the differences in application requirements in the following sections.
Assignment: Please list the ship that you think your character should be assigned to. Peruse the ship details in the How-To and FAQ and decide for yourself: are they a fighter or combat specialist? Head for the Uesugi: Combat Division! An engineer or a tactician? The Hawking: Science Division is for them. A healer or a biologist? Their home should be the Uesugi: Medical Division. If your character is elderly, under fifteen, chooses not to help the Admiral, or is otherwise unable to contribute to the mission effort, they will automatically be assigned civilian status and housed on the Hawking: Civilian Division.
Appearance: Please link to an image of your character. If an image is not available, please write a description so that other players can get some idea of who they're interacting with. If you are playing a version of a character that looks different from their canon counterpart, please indicate what those differences are.
History: If you are applying as an original universe character and a detailed biography of your character is available online (through fan sites, Wiki, etc.) you may link it here; if not, please summarize it up to the point in canon that you are taking them from. If you are applying as an alternate universe character please describe in detail their new history. If you are applying as a roleplay universe character, please describe in detail what occurred during their time in another roleplay, with an emphasis on how their experiences affected them, in addition to their canon history before they arrived at their previous roleplay (remember, this can be a link to cut down on how much you need to type). The minimum word count requirement for all histories that are not linked is 350 words.► Update: All linked histories are required to provide a 350 word minimum summary of recent events that the character has lived through right up until coming to the game's universe.
Personality: This is the meat and potatoes of your character. Please provide a thorough portrayal of your character, from major personality traits and values to habits and quirks, values and convictions, likes and dislikes, loves and hatreds. Be as descriptive as possible; this will establish the level of understanding you have of your character and how they will act in-game, making it one of the most important parts of the application. There is a minimum of 300 words for this section. If you are experiencing any difficulties with this portion of the application, please feel free to contact a mod to work out any issues.
Strengths: A summary of character's physical strengths and abilities; swordfighting, superpowers, eye lasers, spells, mind reading, fantastic at poker, etc. Mental strengths go in the personality section.
Weaknesses: A summary of your character's physical and and faults; bum knees, Kryptonite, cats, an allergy to grapes, can't swim, etc. Mental weaknesses go in the personality section.
Sample: There is only ONE sample that must be filled out for this application. In either prose log format or journal entry format, please compose a response to the Admiral's proposal in the Premise. What does your character do upon waking? What is their reaction to the Admiral's words? Do they contact him right away? Do they think it over for hours? Days? Do they pace the room or try to knock down the door to escape? Use this sample to show us how your character would respond, physically, verbally, and mentally, to being suddenly thrust into a new situation and a new universe entirely. The only restriction is that they may not leave the room; they are feeling under the weather if you recall!*
* If your character is unusual, i.e. a Transformer, mermaid, or other non-humanoids, they will be housed in the respective areas that can contain them, such as the docking bay on the Hawking or tanks on the Uesugi, or accommodated to in their rooms (i.e., an Andalite will have a bed tailored to their particular physiology).
This sample will be used as a springboard for your character's arrival in the roleplay: what happens here is what happens when they arrive, with all subsequent entries and logs coming afterward. Even if you choose to follow the alternative prompt, their waking and introduction to the world of the roleplay will have occurred in private between themselves and the Admiral before any first posts in the community proper. This is so that characters have something other than the usual "Where am I?" and "You're here." exchanges. Instead, your character can be placed anywhere you wish for your first post, such as entering their cabin for the first time, exploring the ships, getting something to eat, finding any friends, and so on.
Alternatively, you may write a sample taken from during the game itself. The minimum word count for either type is 400 words (with an emphasis on introspection) for log style and 200 words (with an emphasis on dialogue) for entry style. Remember, becoming stranded in an alternate universe is a very big deal to a lot of people!
