Is such a bad movie.
"Bad" may be too vague.
"The Village" is a pathetic addition to M. Night Shaymalan's normally very impressive portfolio of films. It is, to say the least, a very negative mark on his record.
The acting is apathetic, boring, and not at all captivating nor convincing. The characters are bland, and one does not at any time feel any sort of connection or endearment to them.
As for the trademark "Shaymalan plot twist": One can see it coming from a bajillion and a half lightyears away, and it's weak.
Featuring Joaquin Phoenix!!!! For a grand total of five lines and seven minutes. I found myself sort of wishing he was dead at the very end of the film. And not feeling bad about this.
Also starring William Hurt!! Sporting a surname worthy of what one feels when playing audience to his acting. I have had the dubious pleasure of seeing this actor play a role in a Shakespeare piece, and his soliloquy sounded like he was putting himself to sleep. His performance in "The Village" is, dare I say, worse. Supposedly, his character has daughters (who he barely spends time with and shows no warmth to in the least), and is in love with a woman whom he barely makes eye-contact with. He is, officially, on my list of least-favorite actors of all time.
To my ire, IMDB rewards this carcass a 6.7 rating out of ten.
Other films I did not like (but everyone else seemed to): "Walk the Line", "Shakespeare in Love", "The Cider House Rules", "Good Will Hunting", "Mars Attacks", "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"
Films I do like (broad spectrum): "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", "Chocolat", "What Dreams May Come", "The Fugitive", "A Beautiful Mind", "Labyrinth", "The Pest"
Films I still wish to see: "Mirrormask", "Velvet Goldmine", "Fame", "The Aristocrats"
And that's a piece of my mind.
