What To Do If You or Your Pet Gets Skunked!

Apr 14, 2013 15:26

So what do you do if you or your pets get sprayed by a visiting skunk?

Don't reach for the tomato juice unless it's all you have.
There's a better skunk spray remover that all of us need to keep the ingredients on hand. (Sorry--you have to make this stuff up fresh just before you use it!)
Luckily it's fairly cheap to make.
Here's the odor-blasting formula:
1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide,
1/4 cup of baking soda
and 1 teaspoon of liquid hand soap (Dawn is the preferred variety since it's great at cutting through oil/grease.)
Mix and immediately apply to the stinky pet or human.
Then rinse thoroughly with tap water.

You may need to double or even triple the amount if a large dog or a human gets sprayed.
I suggest you keep your anti-skunk spray supplies along with the recipe and a container of some kind outside in the garden shed where you keep your tools. There's NO WAY you want to deskunk yourself or a pet inside your house!!!
(If you do, you'll have to deskunk your house as well.)

Please note: I vaguely remember reading somewhere that skunk spray can be harmful to the eyes--please call your vet and ask what you need to do if your dog gets sprayed in the eyes.

Here's the address for the internet article this recipe comes from:

I sincerely hope none of you will need this recipe. Please pass it along to everyone you know because somebody somewhere is bound to need it and soon!
