I found a bunch of these trees in a landscaped plot right next to the Georgia World Congress Center. This plot was part of a walking tour and located right off the Andrew Young Blvd. I tried to locate it in Google maps but can't pinpoint the location ( Read more... )

Seconded. It's basically everywhere in the South. I kinda like the really sassy pinks.

I kinda got immune to them to some extent because they are used so extensively in landscaping in NC, but every now and then you'd run into a HUGE old one that was super impressive. My sister used to have one that was what we called Harlot Pink. It was magnificent.

It really does sound like a crepe myrtle to me also.
BTW: The older varieties occasionally send up suckers from the roots. Lots of people will get one of these from a friend rather than pay money for one from a nursery.

Allegedly they root well from hard wood cuttings in autumn, but I never got a chance to try it.

Crepe Myrtle,
I think. Those brown clusters are the sort-of fruit, but in summer there will be flowers, June-September.

Hmm...I'm gonna buck the trend and say that if it isn't crepe myrtle, it MIGHT be princess tree. Princess tree does point up in a weird arc, and gets the dry brown clusters.

Princess tree is a Bad Thing in the Southeast--gorgeous flowers, but invasive as blazes, and you see a lot of 'em.

Thanks all, it might indeed be a crape myrtle. I found only one image of a crape myrtle that is not in bloom.

I searched for the 'Princess tree', but couldn't find any pics without foliage so I am not sure if that was the one.
