Atlanta area LJers - tree identification

I found a bunch of these trees in a landscaped plot right next to the Georgia World Congress Center. This plot was part of a walking tour and located right off the Andrew Young Blvd. I tried to locate it in Google maps but can't pinpoint the location ( Read more... )

It really does sound like a crepe myrtle to me also.
BTW: The older varieties occasionally send up suckers from the roots. Lots of people will get one of these from a friend rather than pay money for one from a nursery.

Allegedly they root well from hard wood cuttings in autumn, but I never got a chance to try it.

I think the deal is that you cut it while it's dormant, stick the cuttings in a cuttings compost mix, leave it damp enough in a cool dark place all winter then bring it out in spring to "wake up" and take off so really what have you got to lose but an hour of prep time and a pot of soil in a shed all winter? Matter of fact, now that I've said that I sound like a damn slacker for not doing it myself ages ago. Damn my slackerness!

I think you should try taking some root cuttings of your crepe myrtle.
It's fairly easy to do--just Google the instructions for root cuttings and then follow them.
