Don't wanna go to work tomorrow. I wish I knew how much longer I was going to be doing this sucky temp placement, though there has been some discussion about the person I'm covering for. Ze's off sick and the sick note runs out next week so maybe ze'll come back. Oooo, flying pig ( Read more... )

I wanted to be a professional baseball player. Before that, though, I wanted to be a teacher. It says so in my baby book, which my mother updated from time to time until I was about five.

I wanted to be a veterinarian. Duh. :-) As far as what I actually want to do now, I want to rehabilitate injured and orphaned wildlife. I'm still trying to work out HOW to make that happen. :-/

I thought you did that now, just on a rather smaller scale than you would like to. Of course the allergies and the apartment don't help. Maybe you can rehabilitate little tiny animals until you get more space *nods*

I only do "triage," which basically means that I'll take animals from the public and then transfer them to another rehabber. I can only do this with baby wildlife and I can generally only do it on the weekends (because I work during the week and most baby animals can't go without food for 10 hours a day). So I really don't rehab as much as I like- I only have the "basic" stuff here with me in the apartment- my cages and the majority of my rehab equipment is underneath my parent's deck. I really really really want to get back into it, but we have to get a house first (the apartment complex would FREAK if they knew I brought squirrels/raccoons/bats into the apartment every now and then!).

Can you not help out in some other way? I know that the RSPCA places here are usually crying out for people to help, even if it's just someone to walk the dogs! They have other animals that require help too and at least you're still getting involved but without finding the space in your own home to do it.

Amusingly two of my favourite series had characters that went on to become authors and part of that was how I realised that books didn't just write themselves and people could actually do that as a living. I suppose they showed it a bit to be a bit more glamorous than it really is but it didn't put me off when I discovered how hard it is.

It's a shame when something that you really wanted to do turns out to be something that you're really not that good at.

Yeah, I've kind of fallen into doing administrator stuff. I don't know if it's something that I'm good at, it's just something I have experience in.

I don't see why not writing well should stop you being a doctor. Most doctors have appalling writing!

That's a shame. Is there no other position in a caregiving role that you would be able to do, like working in a nursing home or rest home or something like that?

Fun question! geneticload October 12 2008, 22:44:31 UTC
When I was little I wanted to be a professional football player (American football). Needless to say I am not. Now, I'm a part time grad assistant. I just want a job that makes me happy and provides a comfortable living. My greatest joys in life are my partner, my dog, my health, and reading. I want something that will provide enough means and time to make the most of those things. Nothing else matters.

Finding a job that makes you happy sounds simple enough but it seems to be a lot harder than you'd expect.
