Hello -

Remember those fuzzy chicks from six months ago? Here they are all grown up! They're about the same size as the adults and in some cases, kind of indistinguishable. They still have a little filling out and feathering to do, but the roosters are getting sexy and the hens are starting to lay eggs.

The chicks are 3 1/2 months old - not much different from the pictures taken at 3 months. But I had some good ones and thought I'd share.

It's been three months since the chicks pecked their way out of their shells. They're now fully feathered, miniature versions of their adult selves. The pullets are still two months away from laying eggs, but they've begun to attract the attention of some of the 'teenage' roosters. I went out yesterday and took a few pics of the chickies. They're seven weeks old now and have lost all their chick fuzz. They're starting to look like small chickens rather than itty bitties.

Here's an update on the chickies. At five weeks, they have a fairly consistent feather coat and the last of the chick down is disappearing. Earlier this week, they were put outside in their own little house (seriously, it's a repurposed kiddie house) with a heat lamp. In the last week, I've read two books on chickens. One was Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds and the other was The Complete Encyclopedia of Chickens. For me, they were both fascinating reads that happily absorbed hours of attention as I pored over glossy photographs and read through detailed descriptions.

There's a reason why with the last batch of chicks, I took a few pics of them tiny and then never again. It's because the tiny, fuzzy, adorable little babies quickly turn into fairly ugly, half-feathered toddlers who remain uncomfortably 'in between' helpless peepers and aggressive teenage chickens for quite a long time.
