Well... my luck with the PS3 improved slightly? Sort of. First attempt at the fix didn't work due to lack of heat gun (used a blow dryer but it just didn't produce the temperature needed to reflow the motherboard).

I honestly don't know why it took me so long to come to this conclusion, but I figured since my PS3 is basically brick'd as it is, and the warranty is up on it, why don't I tinker with it to see if I can fix it myself? I now have the option of waiting a month and paying $200 to see if Sony can fix or replace it, or I could by a new one and lose all my current data.
