Oatmeal and Stuff

So when the doctor put me on a no-sugar minimal-dairy diet, I was like, but what do I eat for breakfast!? Because except for eggs (which I don't want to eat every day.. or most days) pretty much all the breakfast foods seem to involve either sugar or cheese. But hot cereal with fruit doesn't, so here's notes on my best hot cereal attempt, which came out very tasty: Hot Cereal
  • Bob's Red Mill hot cereal or other hot cereal
  • Cinnamon
  • Pumpkin pie spice mix
  • Salt
  • Candied ginger, diced (yeah, I cheated a bit -- there's sugar in the ginger)
  • Chopped fruits, e.g. banana, pear, plum... use anything that's available :)
  • Chopped nuts, e.g sliced almonds

Cook the hot cereal according to package instructions, except also add some salt and a very generous amount of cinnamon and/or pumpkin pie spice. Mix it with the candied ginger and chopped fruits. It'll come out around half fruit, half cereal. Top it with some sliced almonds for crunch and serve!
You can save the extras in the fridge and just zap it in the microwave for a fast mid-week power breakfast. Cold Cereal

So I spent some time puttering around the cereal aisle trying to find stuff without sugar, and ran across this stuff, whose claim to fame is following some recipe in the Bible. But it has no sugar and looked crunchy and interesting, so I bought some. It's a bit like Grape Nuts (super crunch, little flavor), except it doesn't have yeast and has more different grains. Taking inspiration from the granola I had at a German restaurant nearby, I mixed up thusly:
  • Dry crunchy cereal that's good for you but not otherwise tasty
  • Mixed fruits chopped up!
  • Sliced almonds
  • Raisins
  • Plain yogurt

It's kindof like everything good for you in a bowl, and this way it tastes good, too!
I had always wondered why people would buy such tasteless cereals. Now I know-you have to mix it with other things, and then you can get it exactly the way you want it. :)
