In my dream last night, we were at a restaurant, and one of the items on the dessert menu was a Pound Cake Tasting Platter, featuring pound cakes using recipes from around the world (well, mostly Europe). My friend ordered one, and I was sad, because I could not eat any of it. :(
Here is the recipe that was, to me and my sister growing up, "cake". There was only one kind we ever made, and by 4th grade I had memorized the recipe. It's dead simple to make and has a delicious crusty crust. Note we reduced the sugar somewhat from the original, which was carefully written out to my mom on a piece of Bell Labs notepaper a long time ago.
- 3 sticks margarine or butter
- 3 cups flour
- 2 ½ cups sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ¾ cup milk
- 6 eggs
Preheat oven to 350°F. Put all ingredients in a bowl and beat for 10 minutes with an electric mixer. Pour into greased and floured baking pan. Bake for 1 hour (or 35 minutes for cupcakes).
