Days passed and Yamapi got better and better as Ryo helped him through his physical therapy and recovery. He was enjoying this closeness that they had rarely ever shared before because they were both too busy to put in the effort. But what he didn’t know was that Ryo wasn’t only helping him with his recovery, but also Tatsuya.
Ryo visited the older man in the hospital every day, even though he never actually got to see him. The doctors explained that Ryo coming to visit him would hinder his path to better mental health, but that didn’t stop the man from coming to get updates on Ueda’s condition which really wasn’t changing much.
The doctors had explained to him what Ueda had and how they were planning on helping him, but as they days passed Tatsuya remained convinced that Ryo and him were in love and had been dating for quite some time, secretly though, because Ryo had a boyfriend who Nishikido was going to leave for Ueda.
After the first week, one of the doctors went with Ryo to Tatsuya’s apartment after retrieving the address and key from Ueda in order to pick up some clothes and toiletries for the older man. They made their way to the apartment to find a young man sitting in front of it.
The man didn’t look up until two men were standing in front of the door and Ryo cleared his throat in order to get the man’s attention, so that they could ask him to move, since he was sitting in front of the door. “Who are you? And what are you doing here?” The man asked before they got anything out.
“Shouldn’t we be the ones to ask that? Why are you here?” Nishikido asked right back.
“Well, my name is Nakamaru Yuichi and this is my friend Ueda’s apartment, my friend which nobody’s heard anything from in quite some time. Now can you please tell me what you’re doing here?” Maru replied shortly, exhaustion clear in his voice.
“Oh, you’re a friend of his, sorry then that we didn’t notify you earlier, Ueda never mentioned anybody that we should contact. We’re from the hospital that Ueda has been admitted to and we’re here to pick up a few things since he’ll be staying there for quite some time.” The doctor politely explained the situation to the other man.
“Hospital? Is Ueda okay?” Nakamaru was really worried. First he hadn’t heard anything from the younger man in weeks and now he finds out that he’s in the hospital.
“Physically, he’s fine, but mentally speaking, he’s not really where he ought to be.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“Let’s just say that Ueda doesn’t always think of his fantasies as just fantasies.”
“Wait, so you mean he’s crazy because I’ve known him quite some time and I know he’s not crazy.”
“I know this might seem shocking at first, but it’s true. He might not seem crazy to you, but he is.”
While the conversation was going on, Ryo was just calmly watching everything from the sidelines, but now he decided to step in. “Hey, why don’t we first go inside, gather up what we need, and then we can take you to go see Ueda in the hospital, okay?”
Nakamaru looked at the young man for a second before giving his reply. “Okay.”
Ryo used the key Ueda had given them to unlock the door and stepped in to the apartment with the other two following quickly behind him. The apartment was dark so they couldn’t really see anything at first, until Nakamaru reached over and turned on the light. As Ryo looked around, he saw what would have been a really nice apartment, except that it was now littered with smashed dishes and torn fabric. He turned to the other man to see Nakamaru’s face in complete shock while the doctor’s was calmly examining the place like this is what he had expected to see.
Following the doctor’s lead, they walked into further into the place, not bothering to take off their shoes because of the broken china. “Do you know which one is his room?” the doctor asked Nakamaru as they headed towards the hallway.
“Yeah.” Yuichi quickly took the lead and directed them to the door, but stopped short in front of it, not opening it in fear of what he would find. Realizing that Nakamaru was not going to open it, Ryo sighed, clearly annoyed, and pushed the door open, feeling the wall for the light switch.
As the lights flipped on, they revealed an ordinary room with a bed and a closet, everything perfectly neat and in place. The only difference between this room and any other bedroom in the world was that one of the walls was covered with pictures and objects, all of which linked back to Ryo. There were many pictures of Ryo, obviously taken secretly, in various places, some even in his own home, and there were other things that Ryo had used such as a water bottle and an empty coffee cup. Other than that, everything was how it should be, except on the bed where there was a scarf that looked a lot like the one Ryo’s mother had knit for him, but he had lost it when it was blown away by the wind.
Everyone was frozen by the door for a few seconds at the sight in front of them, until Ryo made his way over to the bed and picked up the scarf he could swear belonged to him. From there, the doctor gave Nakamaru a sideways glance before making his way over to the closet to begin packing things into the bag they had brought with them.
As the doctor packed, Ryo sat on the bed fiddling with his scarf, trying not to look at the wall covered in Nishikido memorabilia, and Nakamaru stood by the door trying to wrap his mind around what he was seeing, finally starting to believe what the doctor had told him earlier about Tatsuya being crazy. The doctor had just finished packing when Nakamaru at last decided to move as he slowly walked towards the wall with his hand out as if to touch the wall to make sure it was real, but before his hand got close enough, he let it fall, stepping back as the doctor came up beside him and started taking pictures of the room.
When the doctor was done with the bedroom, everyone followed him out into the living room where the doctor took a few more pictures and then turned to Nakamaru. “Where’s the bathroom?”
It took Nakamaru awhile to answer for he was fairly lost in his thoughts. “Over there.” Nakamaru vaguely pointed at the bathroom, but remained rooted to his spot as the doctor went to pack a few more things before heading to the door.
Seeing that the two quiet men were not following him, but instead, were lost in their own thoughts, the doctor asked, “So, back to the hospital now?”
This shook both of them out of their reverie as they quietly nodded and followed him out of the apartment.
