My grandmother grew up under Japanese colonization. My father didn't know about 228 until he was in the US even though he was born some years prior to the incident. Taiwan is still considered a "renegade province" by China. I fast on this day to pay homage to my Taiwanese identity, a concept many consider was spawned on this day 59 years ago.
