Man with knife at U.N. attempting suicide - police
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A man arrested in front of U.N. headquarters after slashing at his throat with a knife and screaming in Chinese was trying to kill himself and would not be charged with a crime, New York police said on Sunday.
The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was arrested on Saturday at the main U.N. security checkpoint after he held a 12-inch knife to his throat and started screaming.
"It was an attempted suicide," a police spokesman said. "He cut his neck but he is not in danger of dying."
The man had gone to the United Nations to attract media attention, the spokesman added. Police disarmed him and took him to a hospital for psychological evaluation on Saturday.
I know this man. He is a friend of my father's. He was protesting the UN's negligence toward Taiwan.
