I'm taking another step into being a garage mechanic, and today's topic is chain care. This is all new to me, and I am stuck with whether or not it is time to replace the chain.
I have about 1.75" of play in the chain, so it's time to take up slack. However, I noticed that the block washer on the axle nut is at the last notch on the swingarm. So if I move it back, there are no reference notches. (I've read that one way to ensure the adjustment is even is to measure from the front sprocket to the rear sprocket and ensure the measurement is the same on both sides, but on the right side there's no front sprocket reference as the oil reservoir is on that side?)
The 21-link length is ~12.5", and the manual recommends changing it out at 21.57".
The chain has about 7,000 miles on it. Is it time for it to go?
