Hey again, all!  I got lucky and was able to get a bunch of hides to work with.  I have some crafting plans for a couple of the hides, but I'll welcome any suggestions, or requests!

So, I bought this whitetail kit from vandykes a while ago. I didn't need to use the tanning stuff because the cape I had was already tanned. Now, I want to tan this little deer hide I've got. Hello all!

I was perusing videos on youtube when I stumbed across this video on tanning deer hides in which the man uses Ivory Soap as his tanning agent. Maybe I'm just living in a hole, but I've never heard of that before. Anyone care to enlighten me? Is this commonly used, and does it work well?

Okay so yesterday dad got me a frozen rat.

I skinned and fleshed it and put on mayo/egg gloop.

Just a question.... do I wash the hide before smoking? Orrr do I wipe it off with paper towel? Or do I just smoke it all gloopy?

Any tips would be great.

EDIT: I already wiped off all the excess gloop but there's still a good amount on the pelt.

If I was to salt dry small animal pelts, would I later be able to rehydrate them for tanning? If yes, what should I wash them with before the tanning process? If I could dry them it would be a lot more convenient for me, as I am unable to freeze them (so skin them straight away ( Read more... )
