My top 14 1/2 apps

Jan 07, 2012 10:09

My favorite and/or most used apps that are not preloaded on the iPhone:

1. AppStart for Apple (as I mentioned in the previous post)
2. Skype (because somebody didn’t get an iPhone, we can’t use Facetime)
3. Remote (YES! I can control my iTunes on my stereo with my iPhone!!! There will be a future post on just this…)
4. Shazam (what is the name of this song? This app will tell you)
5. Soundhound (if Shazam doesn’t know, Soundhound does…)
6. Gasbuddy (it has already saved us a couple of bucks in gas…)
7. Flashlight (not as bright as a dedicated tactical light, but you can never have too many flashlights-especially as this one is always on hand)
8. Mapquest 4 (GPS- we will see. I might upgrade to Navigon or Garmin eventually, but so far it has done the job)
9. Atomic (so far it has been MUCH faster than Safari)
10. Urbanspoon (what do you want to do for dinner? I don’t know, what do you want for dinner? Let the App decide…)
11. Find My iPhone (haven’t needed it, hope I never have to, but if I ever lose my iPhone, this App might get my phone back-or at least wipe the data so no one else can use it.)
12. Yahoo Sportacular (I do not watch NFL football on TV, but I do bet against my dad and old college buddies as an excuse to call and harass them, so I like getting the game scores at a drop of a hat. I won’t use this app after the Superbowl until football starts up again in the fall, but it has been surprisingly handy so far.)
13. Detroit WX (local weather, traffic and news all on one handy app)
14. Keyring (finally a way to get rid of all those annoying tags on my keychain!)
14 ½. 12 Days of Christmas This is an Apple app that was released in Canada, the UK, Europe and a lot of other places, but not the US. Apple is giving away one free app, e-book, iTunes song or video for the 12 days after Christmas, free to all who download them. Here in the US, it is possible to create a non-US Apple ID and download these freebies from the foreign Apple stores to your iPhone. This is an awesome idea to reward your loyal customers and teach your new customers how to use the App store and iTunes. It is a real disappointment that they did not include the US in this promotion, but after 12 days, I am sad to say the US is not missing much. Lady Gaga’s Marry the Night video and song were probably the highlight and that comes from a non-Gaga fan. Awesome idea, but it could have been executed a lot better.
