When you first get your iPhone you immediately think of all the cool things you have heard you can do with your phone. It doesn’t take long to wander over to Apple’s App Store to find all the apps you have heard about. And sure enough, there are lots and lots of them… over 500,000 of them. And they are only loosely organized into 21 categories. Apple helps out a little bit by listing staff favorites and the most popular apps of the week and year (both paid and free), but it is still pretty overwhelming. This is actually my second major disappointment in regards to my experiences with the iPhone so far. Apples App store must be managed by committee or liberal arts grad as organization and planning are apparently dirty words. There are 3 zillion flashlight apps (and no comparison to explain which one is best) and not a single app to automatically turn off notifications at night (yeah, I am still cranked up about that).
I have had my iPhone 4S for less than a month now, so I am still discovering useful apps and websites that review and recommend apps, so if you have any suggestions please feel free to comment about them. I am always asking other people what their favorite and most used apps are in hopes of discovering some new apps. I plan to keep my phone un-jailbroken and only purchase and download my apps from the App store for security and stability reasons. I know nothing about jailbreaking iPhones and their corresponding apps, so keep that in mind.
For the new iPhone user, I would recommend you download the free app: "AppStart for iPhone" first. This is an awesome resource that I just found recently, produced by AppAdvice.com. It is the introduction app that Apple should include on their iPhones. It provides lots of useful information about various apps and isn’t afraid to make recommendations. Their website provides additional information in reviewing the apps and organizes them in a multitude of different categories and lists to make it much easier to browse for specific task oriented apps.
There are many websites that discuss apps, the majority of them have never found an app they didn’t like (obviously looking for sponsor ads for their websites or free swag). Some of the websites I have found helpful suggestions for useful apps include (listed in no particular order after the first):
1. appadvice.com
2. lifehacker.com
3. imore.com (just renamed from tipb.com)
4. 9to5mac.com
5. www.idownloadblog.com
6. www.tuaw.com
7. www.iphonehacks.com
8. www.maclife.com
9. osxdaily.com
10. www.ilounge.com
11. www.appolicious.com
12. www.appshopper.com
13. www.brighthub.com
14. iphone.appstorm.net
15. www.148apps.com
16. www.macworld.com
Again, if you know of another website that reviews apps or organizes them better than Apple does, please let me know!
