I hope that you have so much fun in New York City, despite your fears. *hugs* I'm not East Coast so I can't advise you, though. Most of not getting mugged in my experience involves keeping your things close to your person and not looking like a victim. If you're in a group, you should be okay.
Also: Serveta/Nathan's Parents.... or Serveta/Murderface. YOU PICK. :D
Okay, first off, despite it's name, Hell's Kitchen is NOT a bad place. It use to be, that's where it got it's name. But now it's just another neighborhood in the city. You will be fine.
I live here after all.
Well, as to getting here? Where are you? There are trains, buses other than the Chinatown buses, you can drive, and then there is always a plane, but that is expensive.
And Google and/or Map Quest a route. And work it out from there.
Oh, and the neighborhood is near the Lincoln Tunnel. Which is near the Port Authority Bus Terminal, where you would most likely catch the bus anyway. And it's near Times Square. That area is *always* busy.
Like Holkie said, Hell's Kitchen isn't a bad neighborhood. I used to have friends who live there. You won't get mugged. Its mostly Parson's students & gays now XDDD

BUNDLE THE FUCK UP. NYC IS A WIND TUNNEL AND WALKING IS THE PREFERRED MODE OF TRANSPORTATION.
LAYERS, DAMMIT.
It seriously feels like its 20 degrees colder then what it usually is. Bring a back pack with an extra layer in it just in case. ALSO ALSO. Security at the taping will probably insist on holding all your bags. UHHHHHHHH...That's all I can think of.
