Could the Mako of FFVII possibly be a metaphor for nuclear power?  Drawn from the planet, highly volatile, can be turned into a weapon, and there are people out there who really don't like the idea of it as a power souce.  Not entirely sure what sparked that speculation, but it's out there now.
