this morning's heart attack

it's raining as i get off the T near school today, so i sling my backpack around so it's in front of me and take the umbrella out of it. opening the umbrella, i try to close my backpack again with one hand, which doesn't work very well. so poorly, in fact, that i drop the umbrella, breaking its fall with my foot - not like i really needed to break the fall of an umbrella, but it's a habit. of course, in the process of doing so, my backpack slips off my shoulder and lands butt down on the pavement.

did i mention that my laptop lives in my backpack?

all i can think about is the final project i'm in the middle of coding, not to mention the lab manuals i'm writing and the work for my master's thesis. the thesis work at least is stored on a subversion server at school, so that's no huge loss, but the class project subversion server is on the local drive and i made a bunch of uncheckedin changes last night anyway. and the lab manuals are totally not saved anywhere.

so i get to school and boot the laptop. it doesn't even make it to the BIOS startup screen: "no drive found, press F5 to run diagnostics".

long story short, it turns out that the drive had been jiggled loose from its connector (both screws are missing? wtf?) and taking it out and reseating it fixed the problem. but my heart definitely skipped a couple of beats in the process.

needless to say all that work is backed up on a remote server now. always save your work in two places, kids.

school, day in the life, nature
