Been one of those days, safety first, don't push...what's the hurry?

Gah.

Last night about 10:30 or 11:00, I had a knock on my door. I was in bed, getting ready to turn out the light, so I put on my robe and cautiously looked out the peephole into the hall. It looked like one of my neighbors. I opened the door a crack, and he said "Sorry to bother you. Our toilet and tub are backing up and flooding our apartment downstairs from you, and we're calling a plumber out right now. So please don't flush for awhile." I kind of nodded, taken aback. Then I went back to bed and sat reading for a little while. About the time I might have turned off the light, there were motors of trucks and voices outside, and then shortly thereafter loud drilling grinding noises from below. And I thought, well, I may as well just read until they're finished at this point. So I read. And I read. And then about 2 a.m. it was quieter. Sort of. I heard someone say something about tree roots. I decided I was going to try to sleep anyway. Put on the white noise sound files. But the grinding and drilling noises continued off and on. And also, there were people still just standing outside, right below my window, talking. Sometimes loudly. And laughing occasionally. While I do understand - sometimes the only way to get through the ick and irritation of it all is to laugh, I was not so sanguine about the 330 am out in the alleyway yucking it up while I was trying, nearly successfully, to sleep through grinding noises.

I finally had to yell out the window "Could You Please Not." They said sorry, and were quieter, but not entirely quiet. Which I lived with. Until oh, I don't know, sometime after 430 I think. I got up at 730 and called into work and said I'll get there when I get there.

Well, I'm here now. Sort of. I feel a little like road kill on toast. Mmm, toast. I'll be working all Sunday to make up for this. Not looking forward to that, but I can't afford to miss any hours if I can avoid it.

Stupid tree roots. And why does this sort of thing always happen in the middle of the night? Cripes.

On the up side, I was reading Terry Pratchett's new "Nation," which I have to say is completely brilliant. I love it so far. I'll probably finish it pretty soon, since I think I stopped reading at around page 300. Shouldn't be too much left in it from there.

meh, stuff, crabbiness, sleep, work, crazy, tired
