Today being the Monday before Halloween, my orgo lab TA decided to lighten things up a bit by offering a lava lamp to whoever could tell her the best chemistry joke. It was the perfect opportunity for a nerdy joke lover such as myself. I dug deep within my arsenal and pulled out the following:
Q: Who is carbonyl's favorite actor?
A: Michael Ketone
(Those of you who chat with me online will recognize this as one of my former profile jokes.)
Well, I won, of course. It turns out that my TA's definition of a "lava lamp" is a bottle containing Sprite and chocolate chips. As you can imagine, unscrewing the cap decreases the pressure, causing bubbles to form on the chocolate chip nuclei, which in turn causes the chocolate chips to rise to the surface before the bubbles pop and the chips fall back down. While I can't say that I wasn't disappointed about not being the new owner of one of those amorphous neon lamps from the eighties, I must admit that Sprite and chocolate complement each other surprisingly well.
Speaking of surprises, there was one waiting for me in my PO box this afternoon. My family sent me a care package containing, among other things, notes written by each family member, See's chocolate, and "Halloween Pumpkins" (see this entry's photo). Reading through those (mostly) silly notes was a nice way to wind down after what was quite possibly the longest lab period so far this semester. I've yet to start my homework for tonight, but that's okay. It's only 6:00, after all. The evening is young, and the weather is lovely. Farewell, farewell.
