Video Game Post...Skip If You're Not A Gamer

Dec 13, 2009 00:59

Gonna do my take on SpikeTV's Video Game Awards results. Note that I didn't see the show, but I did find the official results on a respected gaming site. So, the results and my takes on them.

Game that won
Game I was expecting to win

MOST ANTICIPATED GAME
Bioshock 2
God of War III
Mass Effect 2
Starcraft II

Not much to say on this one. I was seriously expecting Mass Effect 2 (a game series I absolutely don't care for) to win this one, but apparently people feel more love towards God of War III. Makes me happy that GoWIII wone anyways.

BEST DLC (Downloadable content)
Fallout 3 - Broken Steel
Fallout 3 - Point Lookout
Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and the Damned
Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony

Nothing much to say for this one simply because I don't care for anything here. I never played Fallout 3, and generally don't care to, and as for the DLC for GTAIV, I could care less about that, either. Hell, I'm still trying to finish the main GTAIV game.

BEST DOWNLOADABLE GAME
Battlefield 1943
Fat Princess
Plants vs. Zombies
Shadow Complex

Nothing to say about this one either. None of these games I really care for and the winner, Shadow Complex, is a game I've never heard of.

BEST VOICE
Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn
Claudia Black as Cloe Frazer
Jack Black as Eddie Riggs
Mark Hamill as the Joker
Nolan North as Nathan Drake

I was hoping that Mark Hamill would win with the Joker, but Jack Black stole the show...quite literally. It also pissed me off that he made fun of the other games, especially Batman: Arkham Asylum and Uncharted 2 which in my opinion (and no offense to any Brutal Legends fans here) are far better than Brutal Legends will ever be.

BEST CAST
Brutal Legend
Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard
Ghostbusters: The Video Game
South Park Let's Go Tower Defense Play!
X-Men Orgins: Wolverine Uncaged Edition

Yeah, you can bet that after I found out Jack Black won for Best Voice that Brutal Legend was going to get Best Cast, but I guess everyone loved the X-Men game better. Never played it, and don't care to. I'm not into X-Men all that much anyway.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A HUMAN MALE
Bill Murray as Dr. Peter Venkman
Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
Samuel L. Jackson as Afro Samurai/Ninja Ninja
Shia Labeouf as Sam Witwicky
Vin Diesel as Richard B. Riddick

Yeah, hoping that Bill would come out in this one because I liked his performance in the Ghoustbusters game, but the Hugh Jackman fanboys and fangirls showed their presence in this one. What can you do?

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A HUMAN FEMALE
Eliza Dushku as Rubi Malone
Kristen Bell as Lucy Stillman
Megan Fox as Mikaela Banes
Tricia Helfer as Dare

Nothing to say about this one either. I either don't know or don't care for any of these characters listed.

BEST GAME BASED ON A MOVIE/TV SHOW
Ghostbusters: the Video Game
South Park Lets' Go Tower Defense Play!
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged Edition

I was hoping that the Ghostbusters game would win this one seeing as how someone had finally done Ghostbusters justice in the gaming market, but the South Park game one for whatever odd reason. I am not a fan of South Park, I don't even like South Park, so there's not much for me to say on this one.

BEST GRAPHICS
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Killzone 2
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

This is the one category I really don't care for. I'm not all for the cosmetic makeup of games, but I decided to have fun with this one and attempt to pick out a winner. So I thought Batman: Arkham Asylum would get it because let's face it, that game did look pretty damn sweet, but that doesn't mean I'm not happy with the end result. Uncharted 2 really does look that damn stellar and makes real good use of PS3 hardware, so in the end, that was still a good day!

BEST SCORE
Assassin's Creed II
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Halo 3: ODST
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Once again pulling for Uncharted 2 on this one, but unfortunately the stupid stupid Halo game won.

BEST SOUNDTRACK
Brutal Legend
DJ Hero
Guitar Hero 5
The Beatles: Rock Band

I would think Brutal Legend would come away with this one, but somehow DJ Hero came out on top. I have played DJ Hero at a few places, and I can say that I really don't give a shit about that soundtrack. Mostly it's full of music I either hate or don't care for.

BEST MUSIC GAME
DJ Hero
Guitar Hero 5
Lego Rock Band
The Beatles: Rock Band

Since I don't really play Music Games, there was no way for me to pick something to win out of this one.

BEST DRIVING GAME
Dirt 2
Forza Motorsport 3
Gran Turismo (PSP)
Need For Speed Shift

Okay, this is my favorite genre within all of gaming, but seriously it was hard for me to decide on a winner because I have yet to play any of these games. I'm pretty sure I might want to try out Forza 3 and I know I want to play Gran Turismo when I get another PSP, but as for the other two...Dirt 2 I might consider and I've lost so much faith in the Need For Speed series I probably won't even consider picking that one up. Seriously, the racing category in 2009 was severely lacking. I hope next year will be better.

BEST TEAM SPORTS GAME
FIFA Soccer 10
Madden NFL 10
NBA 2K10
NHL 10

I hate sports games, so this category means absolutely shit to me. Next!

BEST INDIVIDUAL SPORTS GAME
EA Sports Fight Night Round 4
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10
UFC Undisputed 2009
Wii Sports Resort

Same as the last category. Next!

BEST MULTI-PLAYER GAME
Borderlands
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
Halo 3: ODST
Left 4 Dead 2

Yep. Another category that I don't give two shits about. I am not a multi-player gamer...I am a solo gamer, so as for what won and what lost...who gives a shit. Besides, I don't care about any of the nominated games anyway so it doesn't even matter.

BEST RPG
Borderlands
Demon's Souls
Dragon Age: Origins
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside story

Well, yet another sad year for this RPG lover. Not one of these games are something I want to play, and there was seriously no other noteworthy games this year within this genre with the exception of Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. Might as well hold off for Final Fantasy XIII next year and hope that Square-Enix comes out with something else that might me worth my time (such as Kingdom Hearts III or the next Dragon Warrior game).

BEST ACTION ADVENTURE GAME
Assassin's Creed II
Batman: Arkham Assylum
Brutal Legend
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Pulling for either Batman or Uncharted 2 for this one...mainly Uncharted 2 because I liked it a tad bit more than Batman. However, Assassin's Creed II won. Don't really care for the game, but oh well.

BEST FIGHTING GAME
Blazblue: Calamity Trigger
Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny
Street Fighter IV
Tekken 6

I seriously thought that Tekken 6 would steal the victory in this category, but Street Fighter IV proved me wrong. I haven't played Tekken 6 yet, and hopefully by next year I'll have it in my possession. I was surprised, though, that Blazblue was even nominated. I mean, I haven't played that one yet, either, but I would certainly play it since it is about as close to Guilty Gear as one can possibly get. So, yeah...there ya go.

BEST SHOOTER
Halo 3: ODST
Killzone 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

This is another one of those "I don't give a shit" categories, but if I had to pick one, I would have gone with Killzone 2.

BEST HANDHELD GAMES
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box
Scribblenauts

Honestly I couldn't pick a winner for this one, but it was kind of obvious to me that GTA:CW would win.

BEST PC GAME
Dragon Age: Origins
Left 4 Dead 2
Plants vs. Zombies
The Sims 3

This is another one of those "I don't give a shit" categories. I don't play games on PC. I'm strict console gamer, so...there you have it. No need to say anymore.

BEST WII GAME
Madworld
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Punch-out!
Wii Sports Resort

While I have yet to experience any of these games seeing as how I don't own a Wii (but might come to own one next week if I can help it), it was hard for me to pick something, but if I had to go with something, it probably would have been Madworld. From all the good I've heard about this game, I thought for sure it would be a straight shot for the win, but people love their Mario, so I'm not complaining. Mario actually does work out for Nintendo, people.

BEST PS3 GAME
inFamous
Killzone 2
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crank In Time
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

This was the only point I got. I was hoping Uncharted would win, and low and behold, it did! That's not to say that I would have been disappointed if it didn't. All the nominated games are just as great as Uncharted is, and I recommend all of them to anyone who has yet to experience them.

BEST XBOX 360 GAME
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Halo 3: ODST
Forza Motorsport 3
Left 4 Dead 2

This is my favorite "I don't give a shit" category. Why? Easy...because I don't give a shit about the Deathbox 360, that's why. I mean, I know I will eventually end up getting one, but still, I don't give a shit about it. Still, for the record, if I had to pick one out of these bunch, I would pick Forza 3, simply because I'm a racing nut and because, in my opinion, it's one of the only worthwhile games to be played on that paperweight.

BEST INDEPENDENT GAME
`Splosion Man
Flower
Osmos
Trials HD

Can't really pick out anything on this one. However, I was surprised that Flower one. It's on PS3 and I have yet to download and play it, but I've heard great things about it, so I guess it's grounds for me to download and play it within the near future.

STUDIO OF THE YEAR
Infinity Ward
Naughty Dog
Rocksteady Studios
Valve

Once again, hoping for another Uncharted win, I was pulling for Naughty Dog. Rocksteady Studios won this one, but I'm in no way disappointed over this. Batman: Arkham Asylum is a damn fine game and I'm glad they at least won some kind of recognition this entire night. I mean, it seems to me that Batman got cheated in some of the categories it got nominated for, which really wasn't fair to me. So for the only kudos to Batman: Arkham Asylum, go Rocksteady Studios. I look forward to the next visit to the asylum next year.

GAME OF THE YEAR
Assassin's Creed II
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Now this was the biggest shocker of any that I received of that entire show. Yeah, I was so expecting (against hope, thank you very much) that the overhyped, overrated, bullshitery that is known as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was going to find some way to weasel its way to a win for this category (either that or Left 4 Dead 2, another game I give not a shit about). But boy was I wrong! Apparently the Sony forces are strong this year, and everyone who loves to bash the big black shiny box (or little grey matte box depending on which one you have) showed their support for Uncharted 2, and that game (even though I've only played through a small portion of it) is so much awesomeage! I am so glad that it pulled through to the win. It so deserves it.

So that's my take on SpikeTV's VGA 2K9. Take it as you will.
