I don't watch the game awards, mainly b/c I end up hating the winners anyway. It always seems biased towards what is popular/trendy rather than what is genuinely a good game.
For Best Independant Game, I really enjoyed 'Splosion Man. It was a lot of fun, unique, and they did a great job with making 2-player mode different to actually require the teamwork of both players to progress. Unlike New Super Mario on the Wii, which I enjoy very much, but there weren't any changes made for multi-player and you end up just getting each other killed constantly.

You make a valid point. And to further prove that, just look at how much Modern Warfare 2 is thrown in our faces, and it really isn't that good of a game. It's just the same as the last Modern Warfare game with even less motivation, but it still has that high of a fanbase to it for whatever odd reason. To further prove that, I have read a laundry list of MW2 fanboys launch complaints and bashes at both Uncharted 2 and to other gamers. Now granted Uncharted 2 is very popular, but it actually is a damn good game as everyone makes it out to be (I've only played through a small portion of it, but I intend on buying it as soon as I can ( ... )

I have to second the recommendation for 'Splosion Man. If you like classic 2D platforming games, you'll enjoy this one.

I have to agree completely. The actual good games hardly ever get anything in favor of whatever game is hyped at the time. A good example is South Park winning an award when it's only a mediocre game.

As for 'Splosion Man, I'm disappointed it didn't win best Independant Game. It's just so full of character and great gameplay, for both single and multiplayer, I personally found it much more enjoyable than Shadow Complex.
