They trail off, leaving him alone in the middle of the dusty pitch. He opens his eyes very wide, so he won’t cry. He knows that what he has is special and that this is the price. He makes his decision, here and now, at nine years old, that he will pay it. A hand slips into his. “I’ll play with you,” Simone says. He squeezes tight because he knows his little brother hates football and only plays to keep him company. He drops the ball on the ground, and watches carefully as Simone kicks it back towards him.
