"Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself, but talent instantly recognizes genius."

The only person I can think of when I read this is my father. He certainly was a great investigator - he had been doing it for close to thirty years - but where he left his mark was in the work he did with people, be it witnesses, victims or his own staff. He left his impression on everyone he worked with. Everybody had a story. My dad knew the right people, and he knew how to make them better.

My dad's second-in-command and partner for most of his career, Rich Garvey, is a prime example of that. The two of them became good friends and they had a give-and-take with each other over their careers. When Dad passed, that meant Rich inherited his job. This was something Rich wasn't fond of; my father cast a long shadow and he wasn't sure he could follow that at all. But what Rich realized was that my father had been grooming him to do just that for years. He had put his faith in him as a partner and as a successor, without ever telling him. My dad wasn't the kind of man to say it, but he didn't have to. He knew Rich was a good cop, and he trusted him.

Dad was right, too. Rich is still in charge of that office today and he's doing a hell of a job. He had nothing to worry about.
