language task thingy

May 16, 2006 13:55

Hey, so can I ask a favor? I'm trying to estimate how long a particular experiment will take. The experiment consists of reading sentence fragments like: "Before the player pitched..." and then completing them in some way that seems reasonable. If any of you have a few minutes on your hands, could you do the following? Copy-past the 10 sentence fragments below into some text editing program. Note the time. Go through and complete the fragments. Then check the time again and let me know how long it took you. Like every experiment I've ever tried to foist on you, the goal is to go quickly and rely on your first instincts, not to produce the world's cleverest and most poetic sentences. I don't even want to see the completions, though of course you can share if you want. I just want to have some idea of how long this task takes.

Thankee muchly.

While the client emailed...
While the uncle tuned...
After the detective stopped...
When the weightlifter grimaced...
Before the cowboy tied...
While the customer sighed...
When the ambassador arrived...
After the sculptor died...
When the scientist destroyed...
As the guest lounged...

ETA: It's not a contest. Really. If it takes you 20 minutes, that's totally normal and reasonable. And important for me to know. Thanks.
