In the past month of exploration of new and exciting social media I've seen more rampant, nasty, and clueless bigotry than you'd find if you took an escalator upskirt photographer and bred him with a crazed weasel, and then bred the resultant progeny to that dude on rpg.net who thought that the black clerics and female paladins in D&D 4e were going too far, and got litters of raving weaselings. I might be being overly harsh on weasels, here.
I just realized that the reason that this is shocking, the reason that this is infuriating, is because I don't live this normally. I haven't lived this since the early days of Usenet. I in fact walked away from this into a magical bubble world of MUDs and MUSHes and LiveJournal and oh my gosh even freaking World of Warcraft somehow managed to be a vague improvement over this, perhaps because ignore actually, you know, ignores there. Yes. World of Warcraft. Less noticeable cesspittery. Also LOTRO, which is not cesspitty in the slightest. It is wonderful and I am sad that 3d gives me migraines still.
What I did was sneak off into a world that has all of you. You are all helping me live the dream here, a dream in which I am a person, a human being. That is not a given everywhere, it turns out. Shocked, I am shocked, to discover this. I'd gotten so used to being human over here.
