There are so many things that I want to fight against, to fight for, that are worth expending energy upon. There are so many many things that I would like to change about this world, to turn it into a place that I think would be less psychologically damaging, less distracting from the things I find truly important. None of these things are too novel, too original: I think people should be taken care of if they can't take care of themselves. This means health and mental health and dental care, this means food and water and shelter and clothing. I think education is important.
Sometimes, when I get in a mood like this, I really cannot think of one single redeeming thing about American culture. I know that I'm in a bad mood, and that on any other day I could probably point out something about the potential benefits of individualism and a pride in self-sufficiency, about the beauty of freedom and democracy, but I am in a bad mood, so here is what I see:
1) Consumerism
1') Greed
1'') environmental destruction
1''') prolific advertising
2) Shallowness
2') thinness obsession
2'') youth obsession
2''') Celebrity worship
3) Self- aggrandizement
3') bipartisanship
3'') radical political sects
4) violence- c'mon... just look at what we call entertainment.
So we have all these things that, in my opinion are really destructive, pointless, and, well, just stupid, and we cannot manage to do the few things that are important right? Why must people distract themselves to the point of filling their lives with crap that is completely devoid of any intellect, any purpose, any soul, when there are so many things worth fighting for, worth being and doing.
Right now, I am really fed up. I know it's not all on society. I know it's not all on anything, but it seems a convenient scapegoat, and right now, American society seems nothing but a cesspool of the worst that could've been taken from other cultures.
