Ahhhh. I finally made it to Musée Galliera to see the crinoline exhibit of the 2nd empire. It was so crowded, I really need to go back. Thankfully it is only a 15 minute walk from my apartment! I bought the catalog, but was disappointed it only shows a portion of the items displayed. I didn't see signs for "no photographs", but I felt uncomfortable taking them since I knew they had a catalog for sale. I did sneak a couple shots though, and now I'm glad I did since they aren't in the catalog. I tell you one thing, Empress Eugenie had a TINY waist! They had such a great variety of accessories, hats, shoes, jewelry - in addition to the dresses and a few men's ensembles. Lots of stripes, gorgeous sheer fabrics, and inspiring trims. I was surprised to see a purple velvet bodice that had an 18th century-inspired double-scalloped edge that was left raw, but I saw NO sign of unraveling.
It was all incredible! Contrary to what I read in a few places, the museum is temporary exhibits only, with no permanent collection to view.
