Medieval panic

Mar 29, 2014 08:18

So I'm working away on my talk for the medieval conference next month when suddenly I'm seized with a panic attack. Was it because I'm worried about finishing my talk? Making it long enough? Making it good? While I do worry about those things, they weren't the cause of my panic. Here's what my brain said, "OH MY GOD I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO WEAR TO THE MEDIEVAL FEAST AT THE CONFERENCE!!!" I've been dismissing this problem as not-real because I DO have several outfits. But yesterday I was struck by the fact that they are all 15 years old and I have levelled up significantly in my skills and knowledge. And of course I will want to be able to demonstrate that I am keeping track of current developments in medieval clothing scholarship, so I really must have an outfit that reflects all that. So. I dropped my paper for the evening and got to work drafting the latest in supportive underwear. GAH. This is difficult to do for oneself. But I think I have a decent pattern and today I will sew it up in linen. I'm trying to decide on using a Tudor technique of finishing each piece before joining with whip stitch or joining then felling. Any opinions out there? Then I have to decide if I'll just make a new cotehardie or the kirtle and surcoat I've had my eye on for awhile. This must be a costumer's dilemma. I don't think normal scholars run into this kind of a panic. :P
