Remember When People Came to Shows at The Chi?

Mar 16, 2006 10:45

stardate: March 16th, year of our lord two-thousand six
venue: Visible School (better known to most as The Chi)
with:Bredesen for Governor, Elyse Scharer, Doug Watson, Shaun Daknis

certainties in life:
1. school
2. taxes
3. metallica
4. death (possibly related to metallica)
5. no one coming to thursday nite shows at the chi

this rang true once again tonite of a stunning audience of maybe 5 people that weren't performing. This was o.k. though because most of the people performing hadn't seen me play solo yet. Chad Turner of the holiday played first under the moniker(can't remember spelling) of "bredesen for governer" and I enjoyed it, he only played one new song, but it was really good. The best part of his set was san andreus fault by the smile brigade, and high five by calibretto, which Kelly (the promoter) and I were very excited about, and we were the only ones. A guy named Doug Watson played and he did well, pop-rock kinda stuff, he had pritty good songs. For the sake of organization I will come back to my set in a second. After I played a guy named Shaun Daknis played. I thought he was really good, he had a really good presence on stage, a good voice, and well-written songs. It was him and a guy playing guitar with him. They covered a copeland song better than I have ever seen Copeland play (it is rumored in legend that they can play a decent set, I have yet to see it happen, copeland that is.). I enjoyed it so much I threw him on my show on the 24th, and because the tiny bit I talked to him, he was an excellent dude and name-dropped me on stage.

Anyways, on to my set. let me set the mood a bit first. The whole show they just kind of had the house lights on slightly dimmed, they have cooler lights than this and I know it, the way they had it was totally messin up my chi(insert irony of pronunciation here). So I got them to fix that by turning on the stage lights, and I found a huge dry erase board and put it behind me. I wrote my name as big as possible on it in "KISS" fashion. Further trying to make a fool of myself. I took way too long doing this, so I started rushing to get ready, and this sealed my fate. I didn't really take the time to slow down and chill out, so I really messed up my first 3 or 4 songs. There were a few musical parts I just completely forgot, It was a train wreck. about halfway through I finally found my stride when I got to the slower, scarier songs. I played a new song I have yet to name, and the traitor inside flawlessly according to me, and they felt really good. It is really weird that I kind of get more nervous with 10 person crowds than if it is hundreds of people. Playing lousy kind of put me in a goofy mood, but overall the show was fun other than me sucking.
