I've been meaning to post something about this since it happened, but I've found it difficult to assemble my thoughts beyond 'oh my god' and various swear words

Seriously. I can actually forgive the radio hosts because at least they didn't know, even if the segment itself is ridiculous. But the mother, Christ, how could you do that to your kid? I mean, the girl's fourteen, she's still a baby. You're meant to protect your kid from being in these sorts of situations, not pushing them into it.
I think that if Kyle hadn't made that stupid comment, there wouldn't be that much focus on them because they were both apologetic and offered the counselling (although Jackie did offer it first so who knows whether it would've occurred to Kyle had she not said it). The segment and the overall tone of their show definitely deserved the criticism, but I think the mother was a total bitch and loser. How stupid can you possibly be? And why on earth wouldn't she have mentioned that to them beforehand? And why would she have asked it if she knew the answer? God, the mother makes me rage. Not so much Kyle and Jackie O who I felt were more in the wrong place at the wrong time, but geez Louise, that mother...
I agree. To be honest, I just hate Kyle in general and, like I said in the post, I think Jackie O did the best she could when placed in that situation. They both obviously had no idea, and Jackie O at around 0:40-0:44 actually sounds a little close to tears. It's the mother I think who isn't receiving enough criticism. I mean, far out, this is her fourteen year old daughter. I'd be pissed off if the girl was 30, but to talk about sex with her on live radio, it'd be statutory rape anyway, y'know? She's just a kid, and to have what is sure to be one of her worst experiences splashed all over the media for whoever to see is so, so damaging.
I also found it really distasteful that the mother was doing it to win Pink tickets. Like seriously, pimp out your 14 year old daughter's personal life for concert tickets.
The whole situation just makes me feel ill. As for Kyle and Jackie O, I've felt that they were vile excuses for humans for a long time and I'm glad they're finally feeling some repercussions...
Ikr? I cannot get over this woman's audacity and lack of concern for her child's emotional welfare. It's just so awful.
I've always hated Kyle. For some reason, I don't mind Jackie O as much. I've always gotten the feeling that she hated Kyle too but worked with him continually since they seem to be a package deal. I remember watching a few episodes of the latest Big Brother which they hosted ages ago, and being really struck by how uncomfortable Jackie O seemed to be every time Kyle got too close to her. Idk, maybe I was reading too much into it, but I've had that vibe for years now.
I think the mother deserves far, far more flack than the hosts and the higher-ups who would've approved the segment combined.
Weirdly, the bit that gets to me the most in the segment, is when the daughter is trying to avoid answering the question and tells her mum to stop smiling. Wtf is wrong with this woman?
This.
(I also don't really think Kyle deserves all the shit he's getting. He shouldn't 've said anything given that was all he could think of, but it comes across as that was all he could think of and was just grabbing the first thing that came to mind. Srsly, how well and fast could you respond when something like that is sprung on you, live on air? I know I'd panic. He deserves just a little slack-- not a lot, just a little.)
The mother does deserve a lot more flack. I actually had an interesting conversation with my own mum about it, who is following the whole thing a lot more closely than I am. She told me that prior to the radio show, the girl hadn't done anything about the rape, but now there's a proper police investigation into it, even two years later. So it seems at least there might be some good to come out of this whole thing. (My mum was also wondering if maybe it was a part of radio!mum's motives, but I think that's just because my mum tries to see the best in people a little too often)
(To be honest, I agree. Having said that, I think Kyle does plenty of other shit that the public should be reacting to more than they do usually, so I'm kind of glad he's finally facing real consequences for being such a dick in general. Like you said though, what he said wasn't the worst he could have and I do imagine he was more than a little 'on the spot'.)
As much as Kyle and Jackie O annoy me, i honestly dont think theyre at fault here. Kyles comment wasnt the best to make, but it was such and awkward situation and he obviously panic, not that it excuses it. If anything, the Mother is to blame. Id think that if your daughter was a rape victim that alone would be enough to not do it. Also, something that she should maybe tell them before going live on air. The girl is a minor and so her mother signed the consent form knowing full well what she had been through. I mean the girl even said it wasnt fair and that she didnt want to do it. I feel so bad for her because if she said no, the lie dector could have picked it up or she can annuonce to australia she was raped. I really think the mother and the producer need to be slapped. hard

The mother is to blame. That kind of deliberate disregard for your child's welfare is inexcusable. And you're right, the poor kid had no choice but to announce her rape to the public, and that in itself is just so wrongWhat surprises me is the lack of a screening process the radio station had when setting people up on the lie detector. Surely there should be a pre-production stage where they assess who has 'harmless' truths to let loose on suspecting parents. The fact that they put this girl on the radio just proves the ineptness of the producers in handling their guests
