warnings for rape and questionable parenting
I've been meaning to post something about this since it happened, but I've found it difficult to assemble my thoughts beyond 'oh my god' and various swear words.
Kyle Sandilands is an Australian radio host/australian idol judge and is reknowned for being a wanker. On his and his co-host, Jackie O's, radio show last week, they hooked a fourteen-year-old girl up to a lie detector and let her mum go for gold. One of the questions the mother asked was whether or not her daughter had had sex. The daughter responded, hesitantly, that she'd been raped when she was twelve. Her mother knew this. Kyle and Jackie-O have copped a lot of flack over this, which they entirely deserve, but fuck, this is just as much the mother's fault. Who the hell would put their fourteen year old in that sort of position? Weirdly, the bit that gets to me the most in the segment, is when the daughter is trying to avoid answering the question and tells her mum to stop smiling. Wtf is wrong with this woman?
As for Kyle, well.
(To be honest, I think Jackie O handled it as well as she could have given the circumstances. She was apologetic and offered counselling, and stopped the segment. Kyle's response of "so, is that you're only experience?" omg, stfu)
