It was very disorienting to see Jim Ellison on Firefly. Weird universe fusion thing, like. (And Knox, but he never made quite the same deep impression on me.)

She gave the books to me. She gave the books to John--yes, she gave them to him, too. She gave them to both of us. She did not, however, give the books to John and I, or to he and I. Between you and me, people who think she did drive me as crazy as people who think this sentence should have started "between you and I."

I think lie/lay is a lost cause. I'm inclined to blame Bob Dylan. Even my stern and upright Collins English admits that lay is used intransitively, though it specifies that this is dialect or not standard. The way things are going, it may well be standard in a decade or five ( Read more... )
