Congratulations Lisa, I hope everything works out well.

As for the black coffee thing, I can only go one milk one sugar, anything more than that is a bit too bitter. This is coming from a man who prefers to drink Guinness when he goes out to a bar.

Is Guinness bitter? I'm pretty much a noob at alcohol. Alcohol-wise, the only stuff I kind of enjoy is the very sweet stuff (Smirnoff malts or blush wines). The rest is too much for me.

Beer is generally considered to be somewhat bitter, even lagers and pilsners that claim to be clean and crisp still have some of that edge to them. Guinness seems to have that edge sharpened like a razor, but isn't gaudy about it like some beers I've had (read: Black Sheep ale). Guinness is best paired with heavy British cooking, something like Kidney Pie or fish and chips ... or fries if you feel like experimenting with it. Oh and it's thick enough to stand on so it almost constitutes a meal on it's own ( ... )

Smithwicks - it's an irish beer made with no hops, so there's no bitterness to it, just golden barleyness.

Or a good hefeweizen, like Hoegaarden. You can't go wrong with yeast flavour.

Hoegaarden is good, I tried it originally because I've never heard of a white beer at the time and was curious.

I'm in the same boat. I generally don't enjoy the taste of beer, but there are a few that are tolerable. I recommend imported light beers, like Amstell Light. It sounds all hoity-toity, but it's my humble opinion that American beer= swill. At any rate, the lighter the beer, generally the less bitter. Guinness seems to be a notable exception to that rule, though, if only because it has so much flavor that it dampens down some of the bitterness. Some of the Sam Adams beers are great, too.

Actually, you may like Fruli. It's a lembeck, which is a beer made from fruit. I believe Fruli in particular is made from raspberries.

It's a pretty red colour and if served properly comes in a fluted vase-like glass.
