Don't feed the journal (unless you ask first)

In the wake of the Facebook privacy controversy, I have to say that LJ's RSS/Atom/FOAF thing has been bothering me more as I think about it. It's definitely nice to be able to get things like officialgaiman and bunnycomic on my f-list. But these are put out by people who expect tons of readers and want it that way. Flattering as it is when one or two people friend me, if I knew that many people were reading my stuff, I would probably lock this place down like Oak Ridge on high alert, or delete it altogether.

I know anyone can friend or de-friend me without giving me the slightest hint. But a feed can go to any aggregator anywhere, LJ or not, and I'll never know. It certainly doesn't turn up in my "friends" info. I wouldn't have even known about it if I hadn't happened to noticed the little orange icon in my address bar. Which, now that I look, is gone, probably because this is now being foisted off on us all without asking and, since I am obviously not subscribed to the right updates, without notice. I wouldn't be half so upset if they had just dropped me an email saying someone had requested me as a feed, back when it worked that way.

On a potentially related note, I've been longing for a DW text icon from "Army of Ghosts". "They can shoot me dead, but the moral high ground is mine." Anyone up for making it? All I can offer in return is my own applause.

ETA: Several icons in comments, made by the illustrious alto2. I don't mind you taking if she doesn't, but it be nice and credit her when using.
