50 Book Challenge Books #22-23

I have too many books in progress at the moment. Three of which are on hold - two had to go back to the library, and one has gone missing. Oops.

But I did manage to finish A Simple Guide to Freshwater Aquariums by David E. Boruchowitz. I kind of had to, in all the figuring out what I needed to do for Prothvar's water. Well, I had gotten most of the answers I needed about cycling from bettafishowners, but there was something that still just wasn't clicking. I literally went looking for "Aquarium Cycling for Dummies." I did find an "Aquariums for Dummies" book, but went with this other instead, due to the sample stocking schemes and color photos of many species.

And, finally, I "get" cycling. Fish produce ammonia in their waste. Bacteria show up and break the ammonia down into nitrites which will basically have the same effect on fish as carbon monoxide has on us: making it impossible for enough oxygen to be absorbed into the blood. Eventually, more bacteria show up that live off the nitrites and convert them to nitrates, which take muuuuch longer to build up to toxic levels, and which are best controlled through water changes of 25-50% per week. That's what I needed: to have that spelled out as if in a textbook. With graphs showing how the ammonia and nitrites spike sharply and drop off, and how the nitrates build more slowly. Graph stuff on a set of Cartesian coordinates and I'm happy as a pig in shit. I'm such the geek.

Downside: most of the book is focused on much larger community tanks, and now I want one. That's not happening anytime soon, but I am helping out at our agency's group home nearby, which has a 75 gallon tank currently housing two Jack Dempseys with what looks like a case of ich. Perhaps that'll get me by without doing anything insane like pondering how to rearrange my office to make room for a 29 gallon community tank. Really, I need to settle for thinking about upping Prothvar to a 5gal with some cories. Can't be thinking about how if I just slide the craft table over under the window, I could move that bookshelf, leaving a perfect space for a 29gal setup. Nope, not at all. Nor should I be pondering what is involved in setting up a reef aquarium. Not remotely.

Book #23 was Memory by Lois McMaster Bujold. Yeah, yeah, jumping around the Vorkosigan series, per usual. Hallowed Hunt comes out on Tuesday, so you'd think I'd do something sensible like reread Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls instead. But I needed a Miles-as-Auditor fix.
