German spam?

Why, for the love of all the Gods, am I suddenly getting innundated with German spam? I understood the Spanish spam, since I used to be on a couple of Spanish e-lists and forums. But other than Ach tu lieber and dankeschoen, both of which I have probably just mangled, I don't sprachen ze Deutsch.

I didn't even know this, until I peeked in my Bulk Mail folder Saturday night. I meant to click the "empty" link, but clicked the folder name instead. Was amused by the volume of spam with German subject lines, and hit the "empty" link. No biggie. Except the next morning, at church, several people mentioned *they've* been getting German spam ... that says it is from me.

This suggests these spammers have somehow accessed my address book. Except I never even opened any of the emails, much less any mystery attachments. Perhaps the web-based interface my ISP uses is more vulnerable than say Outlook or something of the such?

This is all deeply weird. Just when I thought I had (barely) a clue or two about 'net safety. Between that, the recurrent spyware problems, and the bizarre flashing top-bar of my browser (SBC's proprietary browser -- the top blue bar keeps flashing to look like the standard Windoze bar and then back to its normal self), I really find myself worrying about what sort of security issues we might really have here. I mean, we do pay several of our bills online. Which, you'd think that a quick glance after hacking any of that would convince any would-be thief that we just don't have enough to be worth their time, but who knows?

rant, spam
