So.... the Head of the Department of Biology at our school died today. :-/ (She took over for the last Head of Bio, whom died last year. X___x Our department is so screwed now.) Her death was a huge, huge shock, because even though she's somewhat old and she's been in the hospital for a month for an intestine infection, she's this incredibly larger-than-life woman who founded the Genetics department of our university and scares the bejeezes out of EVERYONE. She was also supposed to be my Genetics professor next semester because she's so famous for teaching that course and has won numerous, national awards for her work. No one in the bio department knows what's was actually wrong with her, but it's a combination of a septic intestine infection, a stomach ulcer, and multiple organ failure after some huge surgery she had.
I think the shocking part was that I was asking one of the older undergrads in my lab about her class and how to survive it just yesterday morning. :( I had no idea... Our professor was clearly upset. She was already extremely stressed from trying to talk to all of us (4 undergrads and 4 grads) about our projects before she leaves for her vacation all of next week, and today the death of our Head of Bio just hit her really hard. She was near silent, and she snapped at every one of us to the point that ALL of us were terrified of approaching her all day.
*sigh* And I worked almost eight hours again. At this rate I'm going to be over the 37 hour limit I'm allowed for my summer program and probably won't be paid. Awesome. I've also collected 600 eggs from each plate, which means that I have over 12,000 eggs that I've collected over the past few days. My eyes hurt, my back is strained, and my butt hurts from sitting at the microscope so much.
AND THE BLOODY EXPERIMENT DIDN'T EVEN WORK. Well, one of the grad students did almost the same project and her's didn't work, but I was hoping that all my effort would pay off and I'd get at least a good ratio of dead to good fruit fly eggs. (We're messing with their genome.) Unfortunately, 98% of mine are living. .____.;; So yeah.
Tomorrow I also have to wake up at 7:30 to go into lab early to check my flies before we go for a full day, 9-to-5 gathering of various other Drosophila/fruit fly labs in the area. Good thing they provide lunch. @____@
