St. Nicholas Day

Today, as most people know, is St. Nicholas Day. It's not a day celebrated too much in the States, but here in Germany it is at least acknowledged. St. Nicholas is the saint (from Bari, Italy) on whom the iconic Santa Claus is based. In England he is known as Father Christmas, a title I much prefer to the 'jolly fat elf' of American folklore.

So, how is St. Nicholas Day celebrated here in Germany, or at least here at the farm? Chocolate! lots of it! Nina, Kira, Laila and I all got chocolate santas from Reinhilde while our friend Jutta passed around chocolate lollies to all the barn kids today. When she came to me she held up the lolly and asked, "Was du liebst?" (What do you love?) and I said, "Oh I love you" and gave her a hug while she laughed. I did get the lolly, by the way. *grin* There were also lots of homebaked cookies to be had: some from a friend of Nina's from Bavaria and some the Uwe's mom made. Yummy!

So Happy St. Nicholas Day to you all...
